Terrell Owens & Bill Belichick’s First Ballot Hall of Fame Snubs

Can you tell the story of the National Football League without ______?? Were you among the best at your position for a 5 year period?? What historic feats did you perform during your career?? Feats…not one… feats! It goes beyond just the numbers…. its not The Hall of Accounting. Its the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Rarely do you hear from me on who should be a 1st ballot selection for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, I just get excited to see that player or coach to get in. Until now. There isn’t a world where Bill Belichick and his 6 Super Bowls and 333 victories, just short of Don Shula’s 347, should be in Canton the second he was up. I waxed philosophically just a few articles ago why I thought the Buffalo Bills should have hired him. Its abysmal to have media members who vote enact a vendetta against a player or coach who earned their way to cementing their legacies in the PFHoF.

No one anywhere appreciates the PFHoF as I do as I have written letters and articles here advocating for players and coaches. What bothers me is now we’re going to have media members pay back Belichick because he was caustic in press conferences. This isn’t about your personal feelings, this is about honoring the integrity of The Hall and you’re a steward to ensure those deserving make it. Especially when it comes to coaches who are more advanced in age retirement wise vs players. He is 73 years of age and tomorrow is not promised.

You want the Hall of Famer to be able to enjoy the honor among family, teammates and furthermore to be ambassadors of the game. I watched the late Kevin Greene addressing an All America High School team and saw how those players eyes wide and quiet enough to hear a pin drop. You knew they understood they were listening to greatness. In a world devoid of this due to immediate and empty social media type popularity we need more to inspire others to aspire to be the best they can be.

Those who had the greatest careers and deserve to be in on the 1st ballot earned that right. A competitor wants to be the best and have that one up on their contemporaries. To have that stripped away by some writer who was jealous of your success and voting against you to get some revenge is horrible. Are there prejudices that are rearing their head as well?

I thought this when Terrell Owens was passed over when he was up to make the PFHOF on a first ballot in 2017. I applaud him for standing up but held indifference when he decided not to attend the 2018 ceremony and had his own at University of Tennessee Chatanooga. I owe T.O. an apology as I thought he should have attended the festivities in Canton. In the weeks leading up to the ceremony I rememeber having a back and forth with his former receivers Coach Ray Sherman and 49er teammate Derrick Deese on my old Facebook page that went on for several days. Not going in on the 1st ballot cut T.O. deep.

I was invited to attend the enshrinement ceremonies and went to everything. The Gold Jacket Dinner, Enshrinement Ceremony, Jerry Kramer’s party the day of Enshrinement, and the Sunday Round Table Discussion with the enshrinees. On social media I heard so much venom from white fans and I worried it would carry over to the events. I applaud then President David Baker as every time he addressed the audience he made sure to mention Terrell Owens respecfully and when there were murmurs in the audience (Gold Jacket on Thursday) he reiterated “he is a Hall of Famer and we respect his decision and he’s welcome here!” and set the tone the rest of the weekend. I got the chance to thank him for that at the end of the  ceremony.

That Saturday getting ready for the Enshrinement Ceremony I watched TO’s ceremony online at his alma mater and it was bittersweet. He should have been in Canton but due to voters who were holding a grudge didn’t vote him in on 1st ballot.

Pro Football Hall of Fame President David Baker

Its time to reorganize the Pro Football Hall of Fame voting. We need some new blood in the arena and some independent voices need to be included who love this game and not leave it to just sportswriters. I, The Chancellor of Football would like a Hall of Fame vote.

Too many old timers are holding grudges, forming subcommittees negotiating “vote for my guy and I’ll vote for yours.” They’re also campaigning against players and coaches which is an embarrassment for Canton.

In 2016 I can remember Kenny Stabler being selected posthumously who should have been in years before. There wasn’t a dry eye in that Gold Jacket arena when his grandson came up to to the stage to accept his HOF crest. Think to Steve McMichael’s enshrinement at home in Chicago. Or former Bengal Reggie Williams today expressing the angst and disappointment his teammate Ken “The Rattler” Riley felt on being overlooked by Canton for many years. He was another voted in posthumously.

Lets stop playing games when legacies are at stake. Make an exception and put Belichick in!!

Super Bowl LX: Sam Darnold Has A Chance To Become An Elite Quarterback

Sam Darnold is arriving at Super Bowl LX much like Jim Plunkett arrived at Super Bowl XV many moons ago. A 1st round draft pick who was a bust & the team that drafted him jettisoned him off like garbage. He had become a punchline with his “seeing ghosts” comment while being interviewed after a game in New York. Had stops at Carolina and San Fran before taking the Vikings to a 14-3 season last year and then dumped for unproven JJ McCarthy. The Vikings opting for #9 unstated told us they believed Darnold’s last 2 games in ’24 over the first 16.

Minnesota had their best record dating back to their 2009 NFC Championship Game run with Brett Favre at the helm. However all year long fans (and quietly the Vikings brass) waited for the shoe to drop & the jittery knock kneed Darnold of old would show up. He didn’t until a winner take all for the NFC Championship Game against Detroit where he had his worst game of the season. On a Sunday Night with the nation watching he went 18 of 41 for 166 yards in a 31-9 undressing in a game that didn’t appear that close.

It all fell apart with a 27-9 loss in the wildcard round to Los Angeles. Darnold was sacked 9 times and never had his team in the game. They were down 24-3 at the half and the Vikings had seen enough. In the offseason they gave him a low ball 1 year contract and Darnold left for Seattle. Had he really turned his career around? Was the ’24 season he had in Minnesota a mirage??

  • ’24 Vikings season: 361 of 545 – 4,319 yds 35TDs 12 ints. (7.92 yds per att.)
  • ’25 Seahawks season: 323 of 477 -4,048 yds 4,048 yds 25TDs 14ints. (8.48 yds per att.)

The truth of the matter is that gaudy 8.48 yards per attempt is 2nd in the league to Drake Maye. If you’re new here I wrote out on Dec 9th “The Lie Behind Quarterback Passer Rating & Several Useless Statistics” where I told you yards per attempt is the statistic that equates to team success not passer rating… well #1 and #2 in yards per attempt are facing off in LX or 1st vs 11th in passer rating … yet I digress

The truth of the matter we kept holding our breath waiting for Darnold to falter in the end like he did last year, check it… how he has dating back to the 2018 draft. Its not that he rode the coat tails of his team to make it to Santa Clara, he outgunned Matthew Stafford in a career defining NFC Championship Game. Throwing for 346 yards going 25 of 36 with 3TDs. When he came out and hit Rasheed Shehee with that 51 yard bomb 0n the first drive you knew he came to play. He was laughed out of Sofi Stadium losing to the Rams and ultimately his job and came back to excorcise several demons.

To see him stay the course, make the adjustments in his career when he could have slunked away as the draft bust he came to be known for, its impossible to not pull for him. He just stared down his bully in the NFC Championship Game and carved a Ram defense up that gave him nightmares in ’24. He is one game away from validating his 3rd pick in the NFL draft status with his performance in LX.

LOL Now he is in a Super Bowl where fellow draftees who have won NFL MVPs in Lamar Jackson & Josh Allen have to sit and watch and neither have made it this far. Neither has 1st pick in the draft Baker Mayfield. He wins this game and you have to call him an elite quarterback. Period. With new information we have to change our perspectives.

’25 AFC Championship Game: Patriots v. Broncos

We’ve made it to the precipice of Super Bowl LX now that we’re here at the AFC Championship Game. We haven’t had a championship where the 2nd string quarterback had to start the conference championship game after not taking a snap this season. The Broncos should be in good shape as there isn’t a tremendous dropoff between injured Bo Nix and Jarett Stidham. The truth is a closer look shows Nix has the clutch gene but his overall play…

Stidham has to be what Nick Foles was on the 2017 champion Philadelphia Eagles when he took over for Carson Wentz. Don’t get behind on the chains and get drives into scoring territory to get 3 field goals and play to their defense.

Last week we watched the Texans defense terrorize Drake Maye and the Patriots offense to the tune of 5 sacks and 4 forced fumbles. Now he has to face the Broncos who set a team record 68 sacks (4th in NFL history) on a silent snap count and their rested?? I don’t see it…

The Broncos should force 4+ turnovers and get 7 sacks creating a short field. Stidham needs the 3 FG drives to go with 2 short field TD drives to win 23-15.

Phillip Rivers As Head Coach of The Buffalo Bills Is Ridiculous

Yesterday friends started peppering me on social media about Phillip Rivers interviewing to be Buffalo Bills HC. This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen since he was just coaching high school. Nothing says how far Buffalo’s front office has fallen then to even grant this interview after that disastrous press conference. Right now there is a petition swriling in upstate New York with 69,000 signatures to reinstate Sean McDermott.

My sentiment is he should go and we need a proven Head Coach who will know how to mine a title from the ore of an aging roster. Too many are enjoying the “Aww shucks” demeanor and channelling this into a he could do the job and was a leader of offenses in the league. Lets take a closer look at Rivers’ effectiveness.

#1 Phillip Rivers in 2010 was the leader on a team that finished #1 on offense and #1 on defense. Do you realize this is the only team in the Super Bowl era that had this distinction and didn’t make the playoffs?? The others?? The 1977 Dallas Cowboys (12-2) who ran away with the Super Bowl XII Lombardi & the 1987 San Francisco 49ers (13-2) who should have won XXII but were upset in the playoffs by the Vikings. I covered this anomaly in my 2011 Chargers preview. How well was his leadership then??

#2 Phillip Rivers led his team to the playoffs 7 times in (now) 18 years to the playoffs and only made 1 AFC Championship Game. That was closed by an electric performance of Shawn Merriman. He had a 5-7 record in the playoffs and all of a sudden he knows what it takes to get Buffalo to the Super Bowl in a win at all costs within 3 years?

Yes he is a good soundbite and deserves credit or coming to try to save the Colts season but lets be real here… he went 0-3 and averaged 5.9 yards per attempt and I showed you how anemic those numbers are. Remember? Oh you don’t…

Yes 5.9 yards per attempt would have been 30th if he had enough pass attempts. He’d be with JJ McCarthy who is getting laughed at in Minnesota.

Now all of a sudden he is going to know what Defensive Coordinator to hire to mesh with the offense he is going to bring in. And what offense is that by the way?? Now he is developing talent and knows what to coach based upon high school kids.

Coaching an all white high school team is not the same as coaching an NFL ball club where the majority of those players are black and why doesn’t this same line of biased thinking not extend to black players?

Cam Newton was more accomplished than Rivers when he played, why not call him?? He was an NFL MVP and made it to Super Bowl 50. I’m sure the GM could help Cam get the right coaches in a committee’d approach to it. Evaluate with scouts to know who to select in the draft and free agency. He’ll hire the DLine Coach, LB Coach, Secondary Coach.

You know… Cam will grow into the positi0n. If my assertion sounds ridiculous to you then you know how ridiculous Phillip Rivers sounds to me.

Don’t even have me go into the qualified black coaches in the NFL like Eric Bienemy or even Duce Staley who haven’t been given a shot after a decade plus coaching in the NFL.

Tired of the privileged ploy and my choice is a proven Coach in Bill Belichick I already told you in the last article.

Truth of the matter is GM Brandon Beane never should have kept his job. His roster was atrocious as was the interview selection of Phillip Rivers as Head Coach. It was bad enough you and Terry Pagula looked like Montgomery Burns and Smithers at that debacle of a press conference. Hire Rivers as Coach and you’ll become a full fledged cartoon.

The Buffalo Bills Should Hire Bill Belichick

With the ink drying in the record books for the end of the Buffalo Bills 2025 season and now the firing of Head Coach Sean McDermott, its time ot move forward and hire Bill Belichick. Keep in mind if you’re new here The Chancellor was calling for Sean McDermott’s dismissal the last few weeks here and in social circles since November.

Then my original question was “Has The Buffalo Bills Super Bowl Window Closed” believing it had with Coach McDermott at the helm. The disappointing part is GM Brandon Beane is still inhouse who built such a weak team around Josh Allen.

The epitaph on the McDermott regime is too many “Rudy try hard” types and not blue chip players especially on the defensive side of the ball. No momentum swinging playmakers with sacks, forced fumbles, or turnovers of any kind. Just a schematically sound defense that without playmakers has allowed 31.6 points per game in 7 of our 8 playoff losses. No one to stem the tide and crest momentum in the Bills direction.

Furthermore what is upsetting was the scapegoating then DC Leslie Frazier over the :13 playoff loss to Kansas City in the 36-33 divisional playoff loss in ’21 to KC. Override the DC if you believe something different should have been called. You’re both defensive coordinators…yet I digress.

Our plight has been one of not getting over the hump and winning a Super Bowl and now we’ve wasted most of Josh Allen’s career as he is now 30. The years are running out and the time is now for a quarterback that has taken more hits over the last 7 years than any in the NFL.

If this is all about bringing in culture, know how and intimate knowledge of your newest AFC East antagonist in the Patriots, go hire Bill Belichick before anyone knows what hit them. Yes the man who cultivated “The Patriot Way” that Coach Vrabel resurrected and is taking to the AFC Championship would do Buffalo some good. He knows the discipline and approach it takes to get to and win the Super Bowl that has not been in Orchard Park.

Do you realize he is 14 wins from becoming the NFL’s All Time winningest Coach?? How many times has he been mentioned as being a defensive genius for his morphing a 3-4 to just using Nickle in the ’90 NFC Championship Game?? His 2-5 defense he copied from the late Fritz Shurmer to win Super Bowl XXV?? Or the Ameoba defense also borrowed from Fritz Shurmer to confuse QBs with all standing personnel that he taught to & Brian Flores is killing it with in Minnesota?

Belichick struggled when Brady left because he couldn’t develop a QB like Mike Tomlin. The difference is Bill Belichick’s maintained his genius in crafting top defenses despite their offensive woes. Do you realize he had the 15th (2020), 4th (2021), 9th (2022), & 7th (2023) ranked defenses in the years after Tom?? This isn’t an out of touch Pete Carroll coming back a decade after leaving Seattle. Belichick fielded a top ten defense just 2 years ago. I’d go Tomlin but he wants to take a year off and just had the league’s 26th ranked defense.

The Bills window is now with a franchise quarterback who could use some short fields from a better defense. An offensive coordinator who can maximize an aging Josh Allen and prepare him for a legitimate Super Bowl run. What goes into each meeting, divisional dominance, and championship preparedness. Many people sent me messages and talked behind my back after proclaiming McDermott should be bounced, well he has and you might want to listen to The Chancellor this time as Belichick is key to a championship legacy. Its one of the reasons I used a Gatorade bath from the Giants ’86 playoff win to stretch your imagination. After all…I did mention what his overall legacy had grown to leading in to Super Bowl XLVI. Its high time to listen.

’25 AFC Divisional Preview: Houston Texans at New England Patriots

This isnt Drake Maye v. CJ Stroud as much as each QB v the respective defenses they face. In last week’s round the Houston Texans pass rush with 4 in Danielle Hunter & Will Anderson tore through Pittsburgh.

They allowed Azeez Al Shaair to roam blanketing TEs inside and punish runners if they made it past the line. The colder it is go with the best defense and this #1 ranked unit will get after Drake Maye once they extinguish the running game.

Maye will have to contend with All Pro CB Derek Stingley Jr who last year sharpened his play with then teammate Stephon Diggs. Stingley & Kamari Lassiter will blanket Diggs & Boutte.  This team is looking for a shutout.

The Patriots finished 22nd in the NFL and schematically play well enough to limit CJ Stroud who is missing WR Niko Collins. However the Texans will force 3 or more turnovers to flip the field, givimg Stroud a few short fields

Momentum in football games can turn when a defender makes a thunderous hit or force a fumble or both. Just as we watched Singleton #49 yesterday for the Broncos when he tattooed James Cook of the Bills.

Drake Maye will have nerves in his first playoff game where Stroud, who had a shaky start, should be over his. The Texans need to have their pass rush rattle Maye early and keep him off balance all game. He has feasted off patsies with a weak schedule. Nervous in his first playoff game against a #1 defense is rattling…
