Every year before the draft there are a handful of players pundits debate if their worth a 1st round pick. This year Fernando Mendoza has dominated conversation with fans and online communities in this aspect as the Raiders are set to take him 1st overall. College “feel good” stories come to die in the NFL and I don’t see him as a 1st overall selection.
That is rarified air where a team is hoping to land a future Hall of Famer not just a serviceable QB. You get those in the late 2nd or even the 3rd round which is what Mendoza’s play suggests. Yes he won the National Championship but so did Matt Lienart, Ken Dorsey, Stetson Bennett (who), Mac Jones, & JJ McCarthy. Bennett sits behind reigning MVP Matt Stafford with the Rams. Jones is on his 3rd team and 2nd string to Brock Purdy who just signed a $265 million deal, and McCarthy is a lame duck behind freshly signed Kyler Murray & Carson Wentz. He may not make the opening day roster in Minnesota.
I threw in Lineart & Dorsey as both were coming off back to back college championship visits and both had 34 consecutive wins just snapped in title games. So if you want to start with the he’s played so many college games as a defense… and lets face it: Did you know the Hoosiers won with 47 guys over the age of 23? He was on a well coached team that was 4 years older than many of the kids they faced in college. That won’t happen in the NFL. He ran an offense that was not sophisticated and his mechanics have to improve.
Its one of the reasons the Raiders signed Kirk Cousins who undoubtedly will be the opening day starter.
The Raiders had a tremendous offseason fortifying the defense and put themselves on a collision course where they have to take him #1 overall. If they fortify the line in the draft, Ashton Jeanty will break out and this is an 8 win team and drafting a QB next year #1 won’t be an option.
Mendoza does provide hope and he will be a serviceable starter. In the NFL Linebackers are 1 1/2 steps faster than their collegiate counterparts. The plodding runs you watched with Mendoza in college will lead to his getting hit and he has to be eased into the pro game. Hence the Cousins signing. His play projects to the NFL most reminiscent of Andy Dalton in Cincinnati. On a talented team he can make enough plays for a few playoff runs. Winning a Super Bowl? I don’t see that dynamic a QB.
Indiana and Mendoza caught lightning in a jug with a team old enough they should have been 2nd year NFL players. I’m sold on Mendoza being an average pro quarterback, nothing more.
If the Eagles give another knock kneed performance its time to turn it over to see what Hurts can do. 
Yet here goes Jerry Jones again with all the angst surrounding the contracts of Zeke, Dak, and Amari Cooper. How will this affect the team’s psyche at the outset of the season?? With Elliott holding out and Jerry Jones drawing a line in the stand, this stalemate will go into the season. Who will Jones sign first?? Will Jones sign all three??
2019 NFC East Predictions
The Eagles lacked muscle and attitude in the running game once they lost LaGarrette Blount to Detroit. However the Iggles may have pulled a coup stealing RB Jordan Howard from the Bears in an offseason trade.
Last year he was 0-2 in his starts completing just 34 of 54 for 372 yards 3TDs and 3 ints. This was on a team that started 6-3 where Lazarus (Peterson) rose to rush for 1,090 yards and a defense that finished 17th. Washingon’s defense gave up less than 20 points 6 times in their 1st 9 games then only once over the final 7. McCoy couldn’t win with or lift his team’s spirits then there is no chance of doing it now. Haskins has to play. McCoy’s NFL ceiling is that of a second string QB… Haskins?? Can become a Pro Bowl player if he gets in camp and shows he wants it.
Over in New York it’s hard to watch Eli Manning age and fall into a QB controversy as 1st round pick Daniel Jones. The heir apparent should wind up holding a clip board all year as Manning has his final season where Jones can learn on the sideline. Unlike the situation in Washington, this team is in a complete restructure where playoff aspirations are out of reach.
As the final seconds ticked away in Sunday Night’s 16-15 Wildcard win in Soldier Field, it became apparent Nick Foles had saved the 2018 Eagles season. The magic carpet ride last year that concluded with a 
Yet when you think of Foles, he is thought of as a caretaker of the position until 1st round draft pick Carson Wentz returns from injury. By all accounts Foles was coming to the end of the line in Philly. He had been the dutiful soldier who stepped in and led the Eagles to a championship, then took his place behind Wentz again. He said all the right things but things will change with another berth in the NFC Championship Game.
2018 Predictions:
The 49ers will make a move next year. Teams will scheme Jimmy Garoppolo and expose him as a second tier quarterback. Keep your eye on what happened to him in Minnesota in week 1. They’re not ready yet and Jimmy G is reading his press clippings.
Now who do you take away first?? Do you commit to the run and leave Odell Beckham one on one in the back end?? If you have your defense focused on the pass where does that leave Barkley running the ball or catching out of the backfield?? Those same linebackers watching for Barkley out of the backfield will leave TE Evan Engram open. This weaponry will lead to Eli Manning’s rebirth. They will catch stride somewhere at the midpoint of the season as Head Coach Pat Shurmur has the chance to learn what they do best and their best element of attack.
On a late season road trip where many NFL observers still questioned the Eagles legitimacy. Rumblings continued after a 24-10 prime time Sunday night loss in Seattle. The high flying offense which scored over 30 points in 6 of their last 7 games looked overwhelmed that night. Now at 10-2 they had to travel to Los Angeles (9-3) to play another rising team in the Rams. The winner of this game would have to be taken serious with homefield advantage looming.
